- Sarah Betts' will requested that the family of Claiborn and Anne, as well as their infant Sally Betts, are granted the option of freedom or remaining with the family at the risk of being sold. This was a first step in the manumission of the Scott family.
- In IAS Book 3, the will of Sarah Betts is recorded on page 149. In this entry, the will says "I require that if the Laws of Virginia shall furthermore I require that to render legal manumitting of a slave the master or mistress shall give to said slave or slaves any certain amount of money or other benefit then such sum or sums shall be raised as aforesaid in the payment for the aforesaid slaves." That is to say that Sarah Betts wanted Anne and her family to be able to seek freedom and receive any amount of money to be able to achieve that.
