Rosanna was listed in the register as "bright mulatto" and 5 feet 7 inches tall. She previously registered in Botetourt County. In Common Law Book D, her appearance was listed in the same manner, and she was said to have had a small scar on her forehead.
Robert was listed in the register as 5 feet 10 inches tall and "dark mulatto." He had a scar on the right side of forehead. In Common Law Book E, his appearance was described in the same manner.
Robert was listed in the register as being 6 feet 2.5 inches tall, having a "bright copper complexion," and as having a scar on his left arm near the elbow. He previously registered in Charlotte County on April 5, 1841.

Richmond was also listed in the Requisition Records alongside numerous free Black men who were requisitioned for labor by Major General Breckinridge.
Richard was listed in the register as being 5 feet 11.5 inches tall and "dark colored." In Common Law Book C, his appearance was described in the same manner.
Prudence was listed in the register as being 5 feet and 1 inch tall with a "dark complexion." In Common Law Book D, her appearance was described in the same manner, with the exception of her age being listed at 36 years old.
Peter Wilson, whose alias was Peter Winston, registered three times in Roanoke County, and his age was recorded twice in 1849 and 1859 at 39 and 49 years old. He previously registered in Botetourt County on July 8, 1839. He was listed as having a black complexion and being 5 feet 6 inches tall. The record states that the front teeth in his upper jaw were out. He appeared in Common Law Book E at 41 years old.
Noah was listed in the register as being "bright mulatto." He registered twice at 13 and 21 years old. In Common Law Book B, and at 13 years old, Noah proved via witness that he was freeborn. In Common Law Book D, and at 21 years old, Noah renewed his registration. His appearance was described in the same manner across the documents.
Ned was listed in the register as having a "mulatto" and "dark brown" complexion with a slight scar on his left hand. In Common Law Book E, his appearance was described in the same manner.
Nathaniel was listed in the register as having a "dark complexion" and a "large scar on his left hand between the thumb and forefinger." He was 5 feet 9 inches tall. In Common Law Book E, he was described in the same manner.
Nancy was listed in the register as having a "dark brown complexion" and being 5 feet 2.5 inches tall. Common Law Book E describes her in the same manner.
Nancy was listed in the register as having a "yellow complexion," a crooked finger on her left hand, and a scar on her left ankle. She was 5 feet 6 inches tall. In Common Law Book E, her appearance was listed in the same manner. She previously registered in Appomattox County in November 1854.
Moses was listed in the register as having a "black complexion" and "two scars on his right thumb." He was 5 feet 11.25 inches tall. In Common Law Book D, his appearance was listed in the same manner.
Note Moses Shovely is listed as a free man in the cohabitation records. Further, he is described as the following in Common Law Book E and the Free Black Register: “23 years old, black complexion, 5 feet 7 ½ inches high, with a scar on the back and little finger of his right hand and a scar on the forefinger of his left hand."

Matilda Mays, whose was formerly Matilda Williams, was born of parents who were free before May 1, 1806. She was listed in the register as 5 feet 1 inches tall and "bright mulatto." She was cross-eyed in her left eye and had burns on her right wrist and left arm. She was described in the same manner in Common Law Book E.
Mary was listed in the register as being 5 feet 1.75 inches tall and "dark colored" with a scar on her right hand above her thumb. She registered twice at 21 and 25 years old. Common Law Book C records her registration at 21 years old. Mary's appearance is described the same manner, with the exception of her height being listed as 5 feet 0.75 inches tall.
Mary Shoveley, whose alias was Mary Ross, was listed in the register as having a "black complexion" and being 5 feet 10.25 inches tall. In Common Law Book E, she was described in the same manner.
