Daughter of David Gish. Her father's will stipulated that she would inherit a male slave named Bob. If Mary Eliza Gish were to pass, Bob would go to any of the remaining Gish children. She was also bequeathed Tom, Dely, Mary, and Patsy, to her and brother George Gish.
Mary was listed in the register as "dark colored" and 5 feet 3.5 inches tall, with a burn on her left hand. In Common Law Book C, her appearance was described in the same manner. Additionally, her age was listed as "27 years, 2 months, and 27 days."
Mary was listed in the register as "bright mulatto" and 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a scar on her left arm near her elbow and a burn on her right thumb. She registered twice, and her age was recorded in the Free Black Register 1846 at 21 years old. In Common Law Book C, she was recorded at 18 years old, and her appearance was described in the same manner. Her birth month was August, but the year was not given.
The Requisition Records states at the end of page 3, "The above report shows one slave more than the requisition on the county called for which happened by Mrs. Mary A James' sending on that did not belong to her she only having him hired. She in the last lot furnished one of her own and expects to get the hired boy released."
