In the Settlement of Estates, an amount of $29.00 was agreed upon between L. Simmon and their guardian for the hire of "negro Sampson" for 2 years. This was reported by John Garst Jr., the guardian of Rhosa J. Smith.
Sampson is mentioned in a deposition found in IAS Book 4 and throughout many documents concerning Thomas Tosh and the Tosh Estate. It is stated multiple times throughout the record that he is a "one handed boy." More information about his life are given in the deposition along with more information about Dave, Phoebe, Dick, Franky (Fanny), Sampson, and the unnamed children of Dick and Franky along with the unnamed children of Dave and Phoebe.
Sam was listed in the register as being 5 feet 9 inches tall and "bright mulatto." He had scars on the left side of his left eye and on his right middle finger. In Common Law Book E, Sam's appearance was described in the same manner.
In the will information for Ann N. Branch, Sam Branch's name is written in parenthesis next to the enslaved person Collin. Their connection is not explained. It is likely that Sam Branch was a family member of Ann N. Branch.
