Requisition and Payroll Records
This page contains records from the Library of Virginia and the National Archives. During the Civil War, the Confederate States of America requisitioned enslaved men and forced them to complete labor that support military efforts. The Confederate Slave Payrolls, transcribed from originals digitized by the National Archives, document payments made to enslavers for the labor completed by enslaved people. The Requisition records, drawn from records held by the Library of Virginia, document the county-level process through which enslavers selected and financially appraised enslaved men forcibly sent to support the Confederate war efforts.
