Welcome to the Genealogy of Slavery homepage. This open-access database was created by the Center for Studying Structures of Race and contains information about the history of enslavement in Roanoke County, Virginia from 1840 to 1865. The majority of the database's contents are drawn from the Roanoke County courthouse archives, and whenever possible, our research team has cross-linked entries to show where the same individual appears in multiple sources. The database includes information about more than 4,000 enslaved people who lived in Roanoke County. Please note that this is an ongoing research project. If you have questions about the database, please send an email to Jesse Bucher, bucher@roanoke.edu
